Gazette notices

Gazettal of amendments to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and registration of the amendments as legislative instruments on the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments, occurs after the Legislative and Governance Forum on Food Regulation notifies FSANZ it does not need to review its decision on a standard or a variation to a standard, or, if after a review by FSANZ of its decision (if requested by the Forum) the Forum accepts or amends a draft variation. Each Gazette is sequentially numbered.

Gazette notices are published in the Food Standards Gazette and registered as a Federal Legislative Instrument in Australia. In New Zealand, usually on the same day, the notice is published as part of the New Zealand Gazette. The Food Standards Gazette was previously published by the Australian Government as either a 'Periodic' or 'Special' Commonwealth Gazette. FSANZ took over responsibility for the publication of Gazettes as from Amendment No.59 and these are available electronically below.  

As electronic copies of the gazette are available, hard copies of the Food Standards Gazette are only provided to people without access to the web on request by contacting the Standards Management Officer as standards.management@foodstandards.gov.au or +61 2 6271 2280. Hard copies of both the Food Standards Gazette and the previous Commonwealth Gazettes amending the Code are available from major libraries throughout Australia which participate in the Library Deposit Scheme. The Standards Management Officer can provide information on participating libraries.

New Zealand

In New Zealand, a food standard (New Zealand [Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code] Food Standards) reflecting the changes in the Food Standards Gazette, is issued and comes into effect 28 days after its Gazettal. New Zealand Gazettes are available on the New Zealand Gazette website. The New Zealand Gazette (Te Kahiti o Aotearoa) is part of the Department of Internal Affairs (Te Tari Taiwhenua).
