Proposal P274 - Review of minimum age labelling of foods for infants

Deferral of Proposal P274

The FSANZ Board has agreed to defer consideration of the Final Assessment for Proposal P274 until the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has reviewed the infant feeding guidelines for Australia expected in late 2010. The aim of Proposal P274 is to align the labelling requirements of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code with current infant feeding guidelines. The FSANZ Board is aware of emerging evidence on the age of introduction of solids in infants and the risk of developing allergies, and also that the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) has reviewed current evidence and has recently revised its advice on infant feeding. The NHMRC is expected to consider the age for introducing solid foods during its review and it is possible, although not known at this stage, that the infant feeding recommendations may change in light of this emerging evidence.
