Public Health Nutrition at FSANZ

FSANZ's role is to protect the health of people in Australia and New Zealand by making sure we have a safe and healthy food supply.   Public health nutrition is about the nutritional heath of population groups. FSANZ plays a role in public health nutrition by regulating the composition of certain foods that contribute to maintaining healthy diets; and the labelling of foods to enable consumers to make inform choices in Australia and New Zealand.

Food and Nutrition at FSANZ-what do we do?

Nutrition is an important feature of our work at FSANZ.   An example of one current project is the iodine fortification of salt used in bread to decrease iodine deficiency in Australia.   Other examples are the collecting and publishing of information on what is in food. This information can be used on food labels and to estimate what groups in the population eat.   We also conduct surveys using information on what people eat to check that we consume the right nutrients through our food and we review scientific research to develop rules about what nutrients can be added to our food supply.

We do not provide advice to individuals about diets; please see our healthy eating page to find out where to go for dietary advice.
