Proposal P1053 – Food Safety Management tools

(February 2020)

In June 2018 The Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation (the Forum) noted the increase of foodborne illness outbreaks in Australia and agreed that there is a need to review food safety risk management for the food service and closely related retail sectors.

In response, FSANZ has commenced a Proposal to consider additional food safety management tools for these sectors as part of a broader review of chapter 3 and 4 of the Food Standards Code. For more information see our Review of the Food Safety Management Standards.

Call for comment

We are seeking views from stakeholders in relation to these food safety management tools and whether or not the Code should be amended to mandate their use. In particular, we would welcome information on the potential impacts (positive and negative) on businesses of mandating these measures, including whether and how these tools – if mandated – will improve food safety outcomes.

We are also seeking information to better understand the gap between current practice and the tools proposed by Ministers. The information will contribute to our consideration of costs, benefits, appropriateness and other criteria in the assessment of this Proposal.

Interested parties will have another opportunity to comment in the call for submissions which is expected later in the year.
