Review of added sugars labelling

Proposal P1058 follows FSANZ's review of nutrition labelling for added sugars, completed in 2021. The review was undertaken in response to a request from food ministers.

The review considered three labelling options and the technical matters associated with including added sugars in the NIP. The options considered were:

  1. Quantifying added sugars in the NIP (preferred by food ministers)
  2. Applying a pictorial about sugar to sugary beverages/sugar-sweetened beverages, and
  3. Changing the statement of ingredients to identify sugars-based ingredients.

The review found that while there may be complexities in setting requirements for including added sugars in the NIP, no technical barriers were found.
