A1269 - Cultured Quail as a Novel Food

Published

On 18 June 2025, changes to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) were gazetted to permit the use of cell-cultured quail as a food.

The application from Vow Group Pty Ltd sought approval to use cultured quail cells in combination with other ingredients to make products such as logs, rolls and patties.

The application was assessed under FSANZ’s major procedure and included two rounds of public consultation. Our assessment concluded that the product is safe for human consumption and presents no toxicological, nutritional or allergenic concerns. The quail cell line was found to be genetically stable, and microbiological risks associated with its production can be effectively managed through established food safety controls.

To support the introduction of cultured quail and other future cell-cultured foods, FSANZ also developed new standards that establish clear requirements for labelling, production and sale.

We released the first public call for submissions in December 2023 and a second in November 2024. Feedback from these consultations, along with our scientific assessment and engagement with stakeholders, informed our final decision and the development of the new standards.
